I agree. It had to be someone Cas saw as an equal, and someone who wasn't openly attacking him (or hadn't already openly attacked him), and only Death could really fit the bill there. But I loved that Sam was also giving him a chance. Sam's one of the few people that really gets what redemption means, and I love seeing that in action.
